Black hole of books?

I'm officially on winter break from school. And I'm in Michigan, visiting my family & friends. Of course, I brought a ton of books with me! I read one whole book on my plane rides. :) Yay!

I started reading the Marked series (or is it the Chosen series and Marked is one of the books?) by Cast & Cast. I was really into it too, it was interesting and I was nearly done. And suddenly, the book has disappeared into a black hole because I can't find the damn thing ANYWHERE!

I was reading it on Monday before my best friend came over. It was dark and she was unfamiliar with the road up to my parents' house. So when she called my cell, I put the book down on my bed (I thought), grabbed my phone and fleeces, and ran upstairs to meet her at the end of the driveway. And later the next evening, after our adventures talking all night and in Ann Arbor, I can't find the book. I thought maybe I had brought it upstairs, but it's not there. I thought it had fallen under or behind the bed, it's not. I thought I brought it into one of the other rooms, it's not there. I CAN'T FIND IT AT ALL! Where could it possibly have gone but in a black hole?

I'm upset because it was good and I'm almost done, but also because it's a library book!!! :(

Wish me luck. My last option is asking my best friend if it somehow ended up in her bag.

So little pleasure reading...

Ahh...October was a sparse reading month. :( The evils of being in graduate school! Oh, so it's not evil, but...it leaves little time for reading whole books for pleasure.

And out of those 26 books in October, 2 were for a class!

I'm anticipating that November might be a bit better, reading-wise. I do have Thanksgiving Break coming up, after all. Of course, I also have 4 big papers (one for each class!) that will be due shortly after Thanksgiving Break... But I'm hoping to get some reading done. Or at least a big batch of picture books!

If November fails to be fruitful, there's always December. :) And the big winter break between semesters!

I have found some good book quotes in my various class reading. I should post those! I'll try. :)

It's Banned Book Week!!!

Happy Banned Book Week!

There was a banned book event at the NMSU library this Wednesday that I meant to go to, but didn't make it. :( They were reading excerpts from banned books in front of the library and then having a discussion after each book. So cool. Sad I missed it.

I did, however, get some cool bookmarks and the list of challenged & banned books for 2008-2009 from the public library! I decided to go through and see which of the banned books I've actually read and it's quite a few of them. Check it out:

Books banned/challenged in 2008-2009 that I have actually read:
  • Uncle Bobby's Wedding by Sarah Brannen
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
  • King & King by Linda de Haan & Stern Nijland
  • The Boy Book by E. Lockhart
  • The Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer
  • ttfn by Lauren Myracle
  • The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
  • And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson & Peter Parnell
  • The Book of Bunny Suicides by Andy Riley
  • The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
  • Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld
  • The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud
  • The Color Purple by Alice Walker
And I am proud to say I have these banned/challenged books in my personal library, I just haven't read them yet:
  • The Joy of Sex by Alex Comfort
  • The New Joy of Sex by Alex Comfort
  • Deal With It!: A Whole New Approach to Your Body, Brain, and Life as a gURL by Esther Drill
  • The Geography Club by Brent Hartinger
  • Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire
  • The Golem's Eye by Jonathan Stroud
  • Ptolemy's Gate by Jonathan Stroud
I also have two favorite quotes from the blurbs that describe the objections and actions taken on the books.

First, from the challenge to King & King, the objection was made that "by presenting this kind of issue at such a young age, they're trying to indoctrinate our children." The challenge was taken to various courts and I love the reply from the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit: "There is no evidence of systemic indoctrination." Ha!

Second, from the challenge to And Tango Makes Three, a parent in Ohio raised the concern that the book "is based on one of those subjects that is best left to be discovered by students at another time or in another place." *snorts* What?

So, if you can find one, check out the little booklet "Books Challenged & Banned in 2008-2009" by Robert P. Doyle. :) And visit the Banned Book store and order cool stuff at www.alastore.ala.org. :) YAY!

Know what I forgot about being in school?

You get to buy books every semester!! YES!

I went online and ordered a whole bunch of books--only some of them required for my two classes. The others were suggested by one of my professors, so of course I bought them! Well, granted, they were also on topics that interest me. But books will be streaming into my house through the mail over the next two weeks and I can't tell you how excited I am about it! :)

So far, I've gotten:
  • Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire
  • Development Through the Lifespan, 4th ed. by Laura E. Berk

Hello Thomas Branigan Memorial Library!

So, I am finally in NM. And I went today and got my library card! YAY!! I can't tell you how excited I am to have a working library card again. Even though my new library (TBML?) doesn't have the same loan rules and stuff as AADL. But it's still AWESOME!

Now all I need to internet access at home!

Oh, and to find my little "books read" book b/c I seem to have lost it in the moving shuffle. :(

Goodbye AADL!

In two days I will have to say goodbye to the Ann Arbor District Library. Not working there, but as a patron. I will be moving to New Mexico in exactly a week, but on Saturday, I will be leaving Ann Arbor for good.

I have to turn in all my library books! Right now, I have less than 10 out and it seems so weird! Has that ever happened? :) I was frantically trying to finish them before I had to leave, but I was just too ambitious. Ah, well... My goodbye letter:

Dear AADL,

Despite the craziness that occurs when someone is an employee there, you are an excellent library. I will DEFINITELY miss the four weeks you can have books, the unlimited renewals of items, the no limit on how many items you can take out, the 50 item limit on interlibrary loans, and the fantastic selection. And the new branches. And of course, all my library friends. Please know that I will always think of you fondly. And perhaps, I will be back! :) Please don't miss me too much, although I was an ideal employee and an ideal patron (very very few fines & I always read my books with holds on them first!).

Sincerely,
Dawn

PS. I won't hold it against you that Remus & the Lupins are coming the day AFTER I leave Ann Arbor!

Like I need anymore challenges in my life...

...but I saw the subject of someone's post on Goodreads and thought it sounded cool, so...

I'm going to read books with titles from A-Z! :)

And I'll start with the two I finished last night! *laughs* And I'm not reading them in alphabetical order--that'd probably take too long and soon I'll have other things to worry about (like packing and moving). And some of the harder letters, I might have to cheat a little...

So!

book quote motherload

I've found lots of good things lately, but haven't included them. Some are from books I've read recently, some are just quotes plucked from quote books or included in journals and such. So, here we go!

We are strong enough to stand tearlessly
We are brave enough t bend to cry
And sad enough to knkow we must laugh again
--Nikki Giovanni from "We Are Virginia Tech"

What are the words you do not yet have? What do you need to say? What are the tyrannies you swallow day by day and attempt to make your own, until you will sicken and die of them, still in silence?
--Audre Lorde

If a poet has a dream, it is not of becoming famous, but of being believed.
--Jean Cocteau

It is always hazardous to express what one has to say indirectly and allusively.
--Walter Pater

Nobody is bored when he is trying to make something that is beautiful, or to discover something that is true.
--William Inge

Life loves to be taken by the lapel and told: I'm with you, kid. Let's go.
--Maya Angelou

Success consists of getting up just one time more than you fall.
--Oliver Goldsmith

Everything you want is out there waiting for you to ask. Everything you want also wants you. But you have to take action to get it.
--Jack Canfield

It's funny how bed and pillows and covers can change a conversation. Words turn quiet and you mean more and say less. It's like you can build your own little world, Population: 2.
--Robin Benway from Audrey, Wait!

Thursday, April 9, 2009

Leave being kind and selfless to the people who can afford it. To the people who have experienced it for themselves. Do unto others is a very nice saying, but it doesn't really take certain things into account. Basically, how do you know what to do unto others when nobody's done it unto you?
--Nora Raleigh Baskin from All We Know of Love

Sunday, April 5, 2009

"All we are, all we can be, are the stories we tell," he says, and he is talking as if he is talking only to me. "Long after we are gone, our words will be all that is left, and who is to say what really happened or even what reality is? Our stories, our fiction, our words will be as close to truth as can be. And no one can take that away from you."
--Nora Raleigh Baskin from Anything But Typical

Young Adult fiction editor

I want to read young adult books for a living. I want to edit them. How can I do that? Someone tell me! :) I love young adult books.

I was talking to some of my students about young adult books the other day and it was so much fun. And my partner's daughter and I talk about them too--she even recommended a good series to me by Shannon Hale that is her favorite.

Why can't I just read for a living? Or at least read and get paid for it? How do people end up doing that?

What It Is by Lynda Barry

I've always liked Lynda Barry. And her newest book is the best yet. It's a book about writing, but it's all these drawings and collages and she tells her own personal stories too. I love it. Maybe what I liked best were the questions she asks in her collages at times. Here are my favorites.

What is the difference between imagination and memory? Which is stronger?

To follow a wandering mind means having to get lost. Can you stand being lost?

Is reminded the same as remembered?

What is the difference between lying and pretending? There is no lie in pretending.

And a favorite quote:
I believe there is something in these old stories that does what singing does to words. They have transformational capabilities, in the way melody can transform mood. They can't transform your actual situation, but they can transform your experience of it. We don't create a fantasy world to escape reality, we create it to be able to stay. I believe we have always done this, used images to stand and understand what otherwise would be intolerable.

Cool book. You should check it out.

Holiday appropriate books

I had purchased Six-Word Memoirs on Love & Heartbreak some time ago. It was short, I knew I could finish it in a day. But I left it for awhile. I wanted to savor it at an appropriate time because I know how much I liked the first six-word memoir book.

About a week before Valentine's Day, I decided that was when I'd read it. And I did.

I actually read in the restaurant where my partner and I had reservations during the hour that he was late for said reservations. Kind of bittersweet, you know? And the book was good, as I suspected. There were memorable memoirs, but of course, I wasn't in the mood or place to write them down, so I'll have to read through the book again. And I even got him to read a bit of the book.

It also inspired me to write my own six word memoirs (again), but I decided to do them on my previous relationships--my own little zine of six-word memoirs on love & heartbreak. :) I'm working on it now...

It's the first time I've ever read a holiday appropriate book on the actual holiday. Well, maybe I've read picture books before, but... It was fun.
