My electircity is back!

Thank gods I don't have to be so damn cold anymore. Reading by candlelight in the winter--romantic and nice, but also cold and hard on the eyes.

And I spent about 2 hours (at least) every day in the library for the past 3 days.

Let's never have to do that again, okay?

But I did read a lot. :) Not much else to do. This is turning out to be a productive vacation--just as I'd hoped!

Update on that later...when it's all said and done.

A little candlelight reading...

Well, my power is out.

I'm in the library, currently. Been here about 2 1/2 hours. I could only report my power outage online...and I've been continually checking to see when they estimate I might have power, but there's no estimate. So I may be doing a little candlelight reading this evening.

I did read a bunch of picture books here at the library, which is always fun. But there was a storytime, so there's lots of noisy little kids right now and I'm really not in the mood. So I'm going to be heading home.

Cross your fingers and hope with me that my power will return soon!

New book update

I don't even think I posted my last batch of new books because I let it go for so long. Sorry. :( But here's some that I just added to my library!

  • Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins
  • Angel Omnibus by various authors
  • Cathy's Book by Stewart, Weisman, & Brigg
  • Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead
  • The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling
  • Ouran High School Host Club #11 by Bisco Hatori
  • Fruits Basket #21 by Natsuki Takaya
Early Reviewer book I won:
  • Mental Illness and Your Town by Larry Hayes
  • Any Given Doomsday by Lori Handeland
Won at my friend Tootie's Oz-themed birthday party:
  • Wicked by Gregory Maguire
Paperbackswapped/Bookmooched:
  • Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer
  • Girls Who Rocked the World 2 by Michelle Roehm

  • Robert Asprin's Myth Adventures Volume One by Robert Asprin
  • Y: The Last Man: One Small Step by Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra, Jose Marzan, Jr., & Paul Chadwick
Not a bad haul. I'm sure there's more laying around here somewhere...

Vacation!!

Okay, I am officially almost on vacation. Well, if the weather hadn't been so bad, I would be at work right now and my vacation would start after that. But the weather is bad and I am home and working from here and the lines between working and not working blur a little. So, I suppose I'm on vacation. Until January 4th! Woo hoo!

How many books do you think I can read on vacation? I do have the holiday obligations to fulfill and I need to get some cleaning done... But I'm working on it!

Oh, and in regards to my personal challenge of reading all those books that I'd been reading forever--I got Inkdeath and Against Happiness done! Still got Evil Genius, Breaking Dawn, and Full Frontal Feminism. But I got two done!

Happy holiday reading!

More book quotes!

After none for so long, suddenly, an abundance!

From Pornography by Debbie Nathan

Porn, on the other hand, is often "all about the fantasy of abundance," says California sex therapist Marty Klein. It's like a fairy tale feast where the food is perfectly prepared and there's more than enough for everyone. Even better, the diners didn't have to buy or cook it--it was no work or trouble at all. And the variety of dishes is amazing. Many, such as roast beef, new potatoes and chocolate cake, are enjoyed by almost everyone. Others--the Brussels sprouts, duck pate and pickled watermelon rinds--make just a few people's mouths water, while others absolutely can't stand them. Regardless of their likes and dislikes, the guests line up at the buffet to load what they want on their plates. No one wonders about what childhood experience made them like funny little green vegetables more than potatoes. No one thinks that watermelon rinds are evil. They just pass them up for the cake. Everyone gorges. Afterward, heartburn is never a problem.

After all, what could be a bigger turn-on than a world where everyone has the right to express his or her sexuality, without having to act out someone else's because of poverty, oppression or ignorance? What could be more exciting than sex education that helps young people know who they are--not by adopting stereotyped identities such as stud, hottie or good girl, but by understanding themselves as community members and complicated individuals?

Book quotes!

From Against Happiness by Eric G. Wilson

What, then, is America becoming? It is turning into a nation of true consumers, people bent on taking in huge mouthfuls of Happy Meals, hoping too for the special prize, earned just for eating an imitation of a real hamburger. What, really, could be wrong with this? Apparently a lot could be wrong. Look at what sort of people this culture is creating. I have seen them. You have too. They haunt the gaudy and garish spaces of the world and ignore the dark margins. They tilt their heads to the side, feign bemusement, and not knowingly. They clinch their eyes in looks of concern. They blink a lot, bewildered. They murmur truisms about overcoming adversity. They say that they love their parents and puppies and all babies. They devour bestsellers about the wisdom of children or coaches. They can be smarmy war-mongering conservatives or passive-aggressive peace-loving liberals. They can be Christians hiding their meanness or New Agers hungry for power. They adore the Lifetime channel. They are happy campers. They want God to bless the world. They want us to ask them about their children. They believe that a hug is an ideal gift; one size fits all. They think that kind words make good echoes. They join Book-of-the-Month clubs and identify with sympathetic characters. They sign their e-mails with chirpy icons. They swear by the power of prayer. The swear by the power of positive thinking. They dream of having Norman Vincent Peale as a dinner guest. They would eat Jell-O and Cool Whip. They would eat turkey too and make an endless Thanksgiving.

Surely some of you have felt the same way that I do. You have turned sullenly from those thousands of glowing, perfect teeth lighting the American landscape and slouched to the darkness—the half-lighted room, the twilight forest, the empty cafĂ©. There you have sat and settled into the bare, hard fact that the world is terrible in its beauty, indifferent much of the time, incoherent and nervous and resplendent when on certain evenings, when the clouds are right, a furious owl swooshes luridly from the horizon. You feel that sweet pressure behind your eyes, as if you would at any minute explode into hot tears. You long to languish in this unnamed sadness, this vague sense that everything is precious because it is dying, because you can never hold it, because it exists for only an instant.

Creating doesn't make us unhappy, unhappiness makes us creative. To create is to live, and in living, we want only to create more, to set our foundations deeper and reach higher toward the sky. If sadness is what makes us creative, then sadness is nothing else but life.

Trying to forget sadness and its integral place in the great rhythm of the cosmos, this sort of happiness insinuates in the end that the blues are an aberrant state that should be cursed as weakness of will or removed with the help of a little pink pill.

Reading the same books...forever!

Okay, so I've been reading the same few books forever...and I can't seem to finish them. It's not that I don't enjoy them, it's that I get other things that need to be read sooner. Like...library books that have holds on them that need to be read by a certain date. Or something that catches my interest better.

I vow to finish Breaking Dawn, Inkdeath, Evil Genius, Against Happiness, and especially Full Frontal Feminism by the end of winter break (which for me will be around 1/4). Of course, I have two more grad school applications to finish first and a bunch of library books that need to be read by a certain time, but I'm determined. My last personal challenge of the year. :)

I'm not MIA!

I've been so bad... This month, I've been consumed by graduate school applications. And visiting friends. And procrastinating. I haven't been reading much. And I wanted to do NaNoWriMo, but I haven't even done that! :( It's been an unproductive month, book wise. Well, except for buying them, as usual...

I'll be better. I'm "off" on vacation this week and I'm hoping to read a bit, since I seem to be hoarding library books again. I need to relax. In between writing essays for grad school apps. :)

Wish me luck!

The end of an era

As of today, I am no longer working at the library. They were unwilling to work with my schedule to let me participate in a research study for a month, so I quit.

I'm very sad that I will not be around all those books all the time. I will probably reapply, but due to crazy politics (and the fact that certain higher ups don't like me much for some reason), I may not be hired back.

What sucks most (besides not getting to see all the cool people I loved working with)? I'm going to have to pay a non-resident fee for my card. :(

I am changing the world

I am making people's lives better by encouraging them to read Scaredy Squirrel, Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend, & Scaredy Squirrel Goes to the Beach by Melanie Watt.

Go on, read them. I know you'll love Scaredy Squirrel!!

...and some awesome poems

Again, from Word Warriors. Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

Subtle Sister by Alix Olsen

So we've learned karate,
carry knives on our runs
wield words like weapons
prepare glares like hidden guns,
we've deconstructed, demystified
tried retribution, remythologized,
we've been diagnosed with your diseases,
and still tried pleases, tried tears, tried Jesus.

You wanna see what it's like down here
in this pool of someone else's rules, well
jump in, take a swim or just sit in this pit
squishing bare toes in someone else's bullshit,
we do it all the time.

Still we've tried being patient,
collected, calm, nice
trying praying, tried laying you
paying the price,
we've learned to scream
until our throats throbbed
what else do you do
while your cunt's being robbed.

And they say "you've made progress, girls,
take a rest in between"
but see while you're resting,
someone else is progressing,
it's what i've seen.
So i take back the whispers,
the cute mute act,
and the high-pitched giggles, yeah
i take them back,
i won't avoid your stare, evade your step,
nothing of that kind,
won't help you help me victimize
the only space that's mine.

See now i'd put my life on the line just to see them trip,
frown and say "funny love, i never saw you slip."
i say, "my life on the line--"
you say, "man, she's jaded."
i say, "maybe control's overrated."
like when we cackled, they called us witches,
now we don't giggle they call us bitches
well i'm cacklin loud, taking it back, full of hiss,
cacklin loud, cackling proud now.

And they're getting nervous with this kissing each other,
scratching their heads,
what's going on brother
and they yell feed your husband, stop feeding the fire!
and we just cackle,
we're a fuckin witches choir.
and we sing "sharpen your knives, sharpen your daughters
steam up the mirrors, bake us some dreams,
cook up some riots, fry up some screams,
and when you're sick of your skirts
slice open the seams
cause they want domestics,
they'll give us needle and thread
for patching their egos.
we'll sow revolution instead."

And i hear you saying
"subtle, sister,
less bite, more bark
you can make your point without leaving such a mark.
subtle, sister,
stop your seething,
i think we got it, i think we're even."

subtle like a penis pounding its target?
subtle like your hissing from across the street?

subtle like the binding on my sisters' feet?
subtle like her belly raped with his semen,
draped in his fuck, funny,
doesn't seem even.

See, sometimes anger's subtle, stocked in metaphor
full of finesse and dressed in allure
yes, sometimes anger's subtle, less rage than sad
leaking slow through spigots you didn't know you had.
and sometimes it's just

fuck you.
fuck you.
you see, and to me,

That's poetry too.

Book of Rules: A Girl's Guide to Doing What You're Told by Nomy Lamm

Part 1.

you don't get to decide what you are
what happens is, you are nothing, and then you pop out
and the doctor says "boy" or else "girl" and that's that.
for the rest of your life you are trying to be "boy" or else "girl."

if you are very lucky, you will be called a man
and you will feel like a man and everyone else will think
you are a man and you will do all the things that real
men are supposed to do and you will score lots of chicks.
then you will be on top of the world, the pinnacle of success,
a very powerful person. this is a catch-22 though,
because if you are called a man and you feel like a man
and everyone thinks you are a man and you do all the things
that real men are supposed to do, then chances are
you are a fucking asshole and i hate you.

if you are called a woman and you feel like a woman
and everyone else thinks of you as a woman and you do all the things
that real women are supposed to do, then you are probably miserable.

if, like most people, you lie somewhere in between or beyond,
then you are also probably miserable.
(tough life.)

Part 2.

The First Thing You Have to Do if You Want to Be a Woman Is Be Pretty.

this is simple.
To be pretty, all you need is to fulfill at least three of these requirements:
(a) a great tan; (b) long legs (two of them); (c) blonde; (d) perky tits;
(e) button nose; (f) smooth skin; (g) slender waist; (h) stare dumbly;
(i) you are a doll; (j) a shimmery lipgloss; (k) a can of diet coke;
(l) a short skirt; (m) be on television

okay, count your points.
don't worry if you didn't quite make it
being pretty is all in the mind.
do this exercise:
every night before you go to sleep,
look in the mirror and say
"please god, you can take away all my friends and family,
make me into a moron,
send me to hell when i die, just please,
make me as beautiful as tori spelling."
if you don't want to look like tori spelling then too bad for you
because it doesn't work any other way.
when you wake up you will be pretty.

Part 3.

your body is a whole entire beautiful magical universe
of its own, exactly right and perfect.
i know that this is not what you have been taught, but it is The Truth.
how could anything so incredible ever be denigrated,
scoffed at, invaded, discounted, spat on, violated, ridiculed?
your body is magic.

what you are thinking now is:
why was i told to look at charts, diagrams, scales
and teen magazines to tell me what is wrong with me?
why wasn't i told to trust myself?
why did they make me feel like a horrifying ugly
pathetic puking loathesome monster,
if the truth is that i am magic?

as woman, you must learn to identify as an object.
you must learn to be objectified, made ugly and disgusting,
but not in a way that is powerful or frightening to them--
you will be made ugly in a putrid, rotting way.
your soul is the first to rot.
then your heart, then your mind, then your flesh...
whatever is left is the magical part that will live forever.
this is the part of you that is eternal.
your silicone implants.

Say More by Sini Anderson

I want to run into the insane energy of love
I want to run into every wall the upper class puts up in our path
When you think you have nothing to say,
Stop and remember what you tell your friends
And when someone is trying to silence you,
Scream louder
I want to spit on sidewalks in front of men who take up way too much space
And when you're walking down the street, if you're a woman or a queer,
Take up more space
I think we should be making out more in front of people who are uncomfortable with it
And don't be afraid to be a punk-rock hippie
And don't be afraid to tell people how much you love them

If you are fortunate enough to have two working legs and a mind,
Run more
If you're not, demand that your people push you
Stop telling yourself you're dumb with nothing to say
And demand that your opinion be heard by your government
Remember that they work for us
If you're hurting, tell someone
If you can't afford your medication, demand that your state provide it for you
Remember that you're not the only one in the room right now who's panickig
And remember that health care in this country is a luxury, and that,
That is just simply wrong
Remember that you deserve clean needles if you need them
And remember that at some point in your life, you can live alive and thrive without self-medicating
I want you to run into the idea that people think you're great, and smart
And I want to be really cool to someone who's talking a bunch of smack about me
Because that, that feels better
Remember it's not okay for anyone to physically, verbally or
mentally abuse you, anyone, not your friends, anyone, not
your girlfriend...anyone.
Listen to your family when they praise you
And tell them to fuck off when they are hurting you
intentionally
Remember that art is a very, very valid form of employment
Know that we couldn't survive without it
Remember right now you're thriving, you're thriving, you are thriving.
Hey you know that sliding scale?
I don't always pay the bottom, and I'm poor.
Run to the stage when you're scared
Run to the kitchen when you're hungry
Stretch more, it feels good
When you hear someone say something fucked up to a young girl on a bus,
stick up for her
And when you hear someone say something fucked up about someone you care about,
stick up for them
Love can hurt, we'll live I swear
Know the power of positivity
And know that I really, really need you
And know that this,
This feels much, much better,
Than when I was writing it alone in my room

I want to run into the insane energy of love
I want to run into every wall
The upper class
Puts up in my path...

I want you to run into the insane energy of love
I want you to run into every wall
The upper class
Puts up...in your path...

bits and pieces from Word Warriors

Just a few of my favorite bits and pieces of poems from Word Warriors.

tell me you don't matter to a universe that conspired
to give you such a tongue, such rhythm
or rhythmless hips, such opposable thumbs--
give thanks or go home a waste of spark
speak or let the maker take back your throat
march or let the creator rescind your feet
dream or let your god destroy your good and fertile mind
this is your warning / this
your birthright / do not let
this universe regreat you.
--Marty McConnell from "instructions for a body"

Girl words the way girls word, the way pussies poem.
--Eve Ensler

the man's always had a plan
to slow down the velocity of a woman's journeys
to lower the volume of woman's voices
saying hush now honey be calm be still
the powers that be saying
there's an appropriate level for your grief and
there's a healthy range for your rage
and when woman exceeds
the emotional speed limit
society puts on the brakes
--Leah Harris from "revenge of the crazy wimmin"

she's wondering how many women are walking around this world
feeling the tingling of their amputated wings
remembering what it was to fly to sing
--Andrea Gibson rom "Blue Blanket"

praise the vens that river these wrists
praise the prolapsed valve in a heart
praise the scars marking a gallbladder absent
praise the rasp and rattle of functioning lungs
praise the prearthritic ache of elbows
and ankles
praise the lifeline sectioning a palm
praise the photographic pads of fingertips
praise the vulnerable dip at the base of a throat
praise the muscles surfacing on an abdomen
praise these arms that carry babies
and anthologies
praise the leg hairs that sprout
and are shaved
praise the ass that refuses to shrink
or be hidden
praise the cunt that bleeds
and accepts, bleeds
and accepts
praise the prominent ridge of nose
praise the strange convexity of ribcage
praise the single hair that insists on growing
from a right areola
praise the dent where the mole was clipped from the back
of a neck
praise these inner thighs brushing
praise these eyelashes that sometimes turn inward
praise these hips preparing to spread
into a grandmother's skirt
praise the beauty of the freckle
on the first knuckle of a left little finger

watch for new books by these authors!

I realized the other day that I'm waiting on new books from lots of authors. I have a little notebook of books that I want to read (as well as my goodreads page), but maybe I need a little notebook of authors to check on. Hmmm...

But I can start here, can't I? :)

Let's see. I just read two awesome new graphic novels last night and I'd like to keep an eye on those authors. Check them out for yourself! Also, I have some favorites where I'm waiting for the next book in the series... Oh, I'll just list them.

  • Aaron Renier (Yay for Spiral-Bound!)
  • James Turner (Rex Libris is awesome, especially if you love librarians)
  • Kaza Kingsley (Erec Rex, of course, and I just looked and the 3rd book is coming out in November!)
  • Lee Welles (3rd Gaia Girls book)
  • Laurell K. Hamilton, Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong, Jim Butcher (my usuals)
  • JT Petty (Clemency Pogue books--why aren't there more???)
  • Andy Runton (Owly #5 will be out soon)
  • Jennifer L. Holm & Matthew Holm (b/c you have to love Babymouse & there's a new one in August!)
  • Melanie Watts (um, hello, Scaredy Squirrel!)
  • Meg Cabot (particularly Being Nikki or whatever the sequel to Airhead will be)

That's all I can think of right now...I know there are more. I'll add as I see fit. I'm glad I checked on some of those authors--I found some new books coming out! Yay! Then I can indulge my love of pre-ordering... :)

Summer Reading update

I've gotten off to a REALLY slow start on my Summer Reading game thinger. But! I finally finished my first adult book. :) So...the tally so far...

1. Size 12 Is Not Fat by Meg Cabot
2.
3.
4.
5.

Reading mysteries seems to be a summer reading program staple for me. I started reading Janet Evanovich for a summer reading program (I had to read a mystery and I don't really like mysteries (as they are traditionally conceived) much). And last year, I think I read a Janet Evanovich. I tried Meg Cabot's mystery series this year b/c I like her YA books so much. And I liked it. It was funny. :) I like funny mysteries. Oh, and ones about supernaturally people (you know, like vampires and werewolves and witches and such). *laughs*

Hmmmm...I've got at least one other adult book started (a non fic book even) and a couple prospects. Yay! I just have to quit getting all those graphic novels and manga from the library. Then I'll have time!

Oh, and GUESS WHAT! The Northfield Township Library has a Summer Reading program for adults too! I starts tomorrow (or techincally today). You enter yourself in a raffle for every book you read. Don't know what the prizes are, but I'm betting they're better than a free movie popcorn. You think?

I was thinking today that I wish I could have my own summer reading game with my friends. I don't know what we'd do, but...we'd have cooler prizes. And then I was thinking, I'd like to have friends who'd be interested in playing reading games with me. Not reading groups. Blech. But, like...someone who would exchange recommendations with me and we could talk about them. Someone to expose me to new books I've never read before or new authors. Well, I often wish I had friends who'd play games with me (like the question game or Truth or sending each other real letters/packages or something). I'm weird that way, I guess.

Anyway... I'm not much for posting this month, am I? I have lots of cool ideas for posts, I've just been too busy to write them. I have to write about the backroom buried treasures, that cookbook Julie & I found, and The Story of the Little Mole Who Went in Search of Whodunit. I'll get around to it...I hope.

Do you know what time it is?

It's Summer Reading Game time! Woo hoo!

And this year, the prize is NOT a coupon for free bread from Great Harvest!

It's a coupon for a free large popcorn from the movie theater.

Yeah...not that inspiring. But! It's a challenge.

*snorts* Like reading 5 books by August is a challenge for me.

Whatever. It's fun! :) I've got to read 5 adult books. I haven't even started yet. I'll keep you updated...

The best book title of the day

Someone had it on hold and I had to pull it b/c they didn't pick it up in time. I'm glad b/c otherwise, I probably never would have seen it!

Jesus in Your Backpack by William R. Grimbol

You know, I thought first, "Wow, I didn't know Jesus could fit in a backpack." Then I thought, "Do you feed him in there? Is he like a pet?"

Yes, I know, very wrong. But it made me laugh, which is really a good thing b/c I don't feel much like laughing these days.

And I just looked it up on amazon to get the author name and there's a Buddha in Your Backpack too (by Franz Metcalf). It's just funny. They're books about spirituality for teens. Hee hee.

The best first line of a children's book EVER!

"Did you know that animal butts are amazing? They are!"
from Look Behind! Tales of Animal Ends by Lola M. Schaefer, Heather Lynn Miller, & Jane Manning

Riding the train!

I'm officially on vacation. And tomorrow (well, in about 8 1/2 hours), I'm taking the train to Chicago! Woo hoo! I'm so excited to ride the train and have nothing to do but read for 4 1/2 hours. Doesn't that sound so cool? :) And I've got a whole train ride back TOO! And three days to explore in Chicago.

I'm bringing about six books with me. *laughs* In my defense, some of them are YA books that will only take me a couple hours to read. So it's not too outrageous! I swear.

And one of my stops in Chicago (if I can find it) will be Powell's. There's a Powell's in Chicago! I had no idea. I adore Powell's. Yay! And if I can find it too, I'll go to the Chicago Public Library. Oh...books. Didn't I tell you I adore them? I'm such a geek, but that's okay. I like me that way.

Lovely new books

More adoration for paperbackswap & bookmooch b/c I got THESE books from them:
  • Sexual Lives: A Reader on the Theories and Realities of Human Sexualities by Robert Heasley & Betsy Crane
  • Babymouse: Beach Babe by Jennifer L. Holm & Matthew Holm
  • Bumperboy and the Loud, Loud Mountain by Debbie Huey

Bumperboy and Babymouse are two of my absolute favorites. :) And I adore Robert and Betsy--I'm so glad to have their book! I've wanted it since they told me it came out. I knew them back at IUP. They were two of the people who kept me sane in that insane place.

Because I was in a book buying mood:

  • Once Upon a Time in the North by Philip Pullman
  • The Blue Girl by Charles de Lint

And from Borders super bargains:

  • Lucinda, Darkly by Sunny
  • Oh My Goth by Gena Showalter

I'm not sure if I want to read Lucinda, Darkly anymore. I read one of Sunny's stories in some anthology and didn't like it much. But...it was $2 in the bargain section at Borders. If I don't like it, I can swap it! :)

Want to know what working in a library is really like?

Read Don Borchert's Free for All! This book was awesome! I could relate to MANY of the stories he told. And it was funny!

Check out my favorite quotes:

"Because there is a belief that once you begin to open books, you will become a better person. It is Pandora's box, but in a good way. You are inching toward the promised land, page by page."

"Support your local library.
Get a library card.
Pay your goddamn fines. Man up for Christ's sake. Be a little responsible."

"Love stories are scarce in the library, and this might have something to do with the fact that we tell people to knock it off and take it outside, which is not a good way for a love story to begin. There are quite a few romantics punching the clock for the library, so in the abstract we are rooting for young lovers, but only in the abstract. We don't want urget fumblings in the adult nonfiction stacks, unzipped jeans, or indiscreet wetness. The janitors will have to bring out their most powerful chemicals and an assortment of disinfectants, and the sharp zip of ammonia will give us all headaches."

And my favorite!:
"I don't understand people who will pay $10 to sit in a movie theater for two hours but hesitate to pay a 25-cent fine for a book that is overdue one day. I do not understand people who will lustily throw $40,000 at the shiny red automobile of their choice, but well up with tears and become outraged when they are asked to pay $5 for a damaged videotape. Either they are fucked up and their priorities are fucked up or I am fucked up and my priorities are fucked up.

Because I am me, I think it is them.

I think a free library is an outrageous perk. I think being able to take out fifty books at a time is an astounding luxury, especially if you've priced hardbound books anytime since the Clinton administration. Go into a public library, fill out an application, and here you go, we'll loan you $1,000 worth of materials. Collateral? Nah--just take them. You're good for it. We'd do it for anybody.

And we would."

David Levithan!

Okay, so I just adore this man's writing. :) Just finished How They Met and Other Stories. Lovely. Especially b/c I'm feeling all lovey and such. Thank you, David, for writing such wonderful books.

Realm of Possibility is still my favorite though.

You know, there's still just so few young adult authors who write fiction for queer kids. That's partly why I love David Levithan. If I was a more accomplished author, I'd write such things. You know what I'd like to see? Young adult lesbian love stories? David and a couple others have written gay boy love stories books, but I can't recall even one about a teenage lesbian couple... Hmmm...might have to research that.

Quotes from How They Met and Other Stories:

I knew I was getting perilously close to opening up my History of Stupid Things Done in the Name of Crushes, but the insidious thing about the History was that I always felt each new blank page had the potential to transform it into a different book. One successful gesture, one successful relationship would suddenly turn it into a History of Stupid Things Done in the Name of Crushes That Were All Redeemed in the End.
--from "Starbucks Boy"

I mean, why is everyone so brainwashed into believing that they have to be in a relationship with one other person? Look at us, Teddy. If anyone were to tell us that the whole girl-boy thing was natural and anything else was unnatural, we'd know they were completely wrong. But have them tell us that every person needs to be with another person in order to be happy, and we nod along like it's the most obvious thing in the world. But there's no reason for it, is theree? It's not a proven truth. It's just some thing that our culture has come to spin itself around, mostly so we'll procreate, and we're the dupes who fall for it over and over and over again.
--from "Miss Lucy Had a Steamboat"

Love weaves itself from hundreds of threads.

We'd said we'd keep in touch. But touch is not something you can keep; as soon as it's gone, it's gone. We should have said we'd keep in words, because they are all we can string between us--words on a telephone line, words appearing on a screen.
--from "Breaking and Entering"

To love--to fall--is not a question.
To touch--to kiss--to speak--those are questions.
--from "Without Saying"

It doesn't have to be on Valentine's Day. It doesn't have to be by the time you turn eighteen or thirty-three or fifty-nine. It doesn't have to conform to whatever is usual. It doesn't have to be kismet at once, or rhapsody by the third date.
It just has to be. In time. In place. In spirit.
It just has to be.
--from "Intersection"
