A mixed bag...

Books from Borders:
  • Let Dai #2 & Let Dai #3 by Sooyeon Won

And I want to rant about how irritated I am with Borders at the moment, but I won't b/c I'm too tired... *sighs*

AADL Summer Reading Game book list:

  1. Undead and Uneasy by MaryJanice Davidson
  2. (...)
  3. (...)
  4. (???)
  5. (???)

I was a bizarre reading fiend today. I sat at my friend's house after I checked in on her cat and read for a bit, then I went and got my oil changed and read while they did that, then I read in the car during rush hour traffic. I was utilizing my time wisely, I guess. :)

I read Mountain Man Dance Moves: The McSweeney's Book of Lists last night. When I checked it out, I was browsing through and laughing hysterically and sharing some of the lists with co-workers. I couldn't wait to read it. It proved just as hilarious as I thought. I have a ton of the lists marked to copy down and share with others (especially the unicorn ones with Caroline). I wish I could share them all here, but that'd get tedious. So, I'll just share one for now and maybe another couple later.

EIGHT REASONS WHY A TYRANNOSAUR CAUGHT IN A TORNADO IS A FUNNY THING TO THINK ABOUT

by Austin Allen

1. The tiny, flailing arms

2. The helpless "RARRRRRR!"

3. The angry, wild-eyed expression

4. That dinosaur with the sail on his back floats by and he's just cruisin'

5. The landing

6. The Wizard of Oz music playing in the background. What an anachronism!

7. Tyrannosaurs inhabited the western United States, an area of the country known for its heavy tornado activity. Statistically speaking, it is probable that the scenario in question actually happened at least once. In this, as in all enduring comedy, there is a grain of indubitable truth inside the humor.

8. "RARRRRRR!" Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! "RAAAARRRRRRRRRR!"

*giggles hysterically* Gods, I love this book...

B&N Summer Clearance Sale

I used to love this sale when I worked at B&N. Mostly b/c we usually had a bunch of awesome journals cheap. I love blank journals. I have tons, but don't write in them. Yes, it's a weird thing. I hope to eventually fill them up with various things and perhaps I will...if I could get myself writing again. Blah. But that's another story...and another blog. Ha!

Books I bought at the online B&N Clearance Sale:
  • The Anti-Valentine's Handbook by J. More
  • The Dragon Quintet edited by Marvin Kaye
  • Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture by Ariel Levy
  • The Joy of Funerals by Alix Strauss
  • Goddess for Hire by Sonia Singh
  • The Mythic Tarot Workbook by Juliet Sharman-Burke
  • Wacky Chicks: Life Lessons from Fearlessly Inappropriate and Fabulously Eccentric Women by Simon Doonan
  • Bachelor Girl: 100 Years of Breaking the Rules--a Social History of Living Single by Betsy Israel
  • Bait and Switch: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream by Barbara Ehrenreich
  • Gluey: A Snail Tale by Vivian Walsh & J. Otto Seibold

Plus I got a Curious George paper doll book and a Batman journal (for Kay). :) Pretty good for $30, if I do say so myself.

Now, I swear, I'm putting away my credit cards and I'm not buying books for at least a month. Or rather...hmmm...well, I have two books on order at Borders and some of my manga might come in at Vault of Midnight. And HP comes out soon. Okay, but no more than that, I swear. I hope. Eep. That might be a harder challenge to keep... BUT I MUST! I AM NOT MADE OF MONEY!!!

Book quotes!

These are all from Lemony Snicket's Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can't Avoid:

Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them.

Love can change a person the way a parent can change a baby--awkwardly, and often with a great deal of mess.

One of the remarkable things about love is that, despite very irritating people writing poems and songs about how pleasant it is, it really is quite pleasant.

If you are allergic to a thing, it is best not to put that thing in your mouth, particularly if the thing is cats.

It is very difficult to make one's way in this world without being wicked at one time or another, when the world's way is so wicked to begin with.

Temper tantrums, however fun they may be to throw, rarely solve whatever problem is causing them.

Sticky Burr!

I saw this book, Sticky Burr: Adventures in Burrwood Forest, in Nicola's one day while I was visiting. I thought it looked cute and requested it from the library. I got it the other day and read it. IT IS THE CUTEST THING EVER!!! I can barely stand it!

I was perusing the library website today (instead of working, procrastination at its best) and I found someone's post about Sticky Burr and there's a website! Aw, how cute! Check it out! http://www.stickyburr.com/

And also, it seems Sticky Burr started as a webcomic and there's a website for that! http://www.fablevision.com/place/library/STICKY/index.html I haven't read it yet, but I will!

When I'm back in my office, I'm printing out the Sticky Burr certificate for the fan club. Hee hee hee! :)

Read MY Manga Challenge, Week 2

For this week:
  • Let Dai #1
  • Vampire Knight #1
  • Absolute Boyfriend #3
  • Never Give Up #1
  • Her Majesty's Dog #3 & #4

Eh, I'm slipping. But not too bad, I guess. That's a total of 13 since 6/11. I really can do better. And I better step it up. I just added like 10 more manga to my library this week alone! ACK!

It may take me longer than July 11th. But, hey, I've got a plan, right? And I'll try my best! :)

Can't...stop...myself...

More to add b/c I can't stop myself from buying all the books in a series when I like it:
  • Never Give Up #4 by Hiromu Mutou
  • Let Dai #7 by Sooyeon Won

No one seems to have the Let Dai series. I lucked out and found #7 at one of the Borders I frequent. I had to order #2 & #3 from my regular Borders... It's weird b/c I remember them having all of them not too long ago. Maybe it's popular? Eh, who knows.

My subscriptions at Vault of Midnight come through:

  • Absolute Boyfriend #4 by Yuu Watase
  • Ouran High School Host Club #9 by Bisco Hatori

*squees* I LOVE VAULT OF MIDNIGHT!!!

I have spread my story reading to Sarah, who is a book processor in the library. :) I've read her three books this week, all while she was working, but I was not. It's fun. Sarah's a good audience. And I'm not just saying that b/c she might be reading this. :P Graham and I got to catch up on our reading this weekend too, but not totally. He read me The Littlest Wolf (CUTE!) and I read him Mr. Pusskins: A Love Story (which Julie found and we read together first awhile ago). I still have Bad Cat to read to him and he might still be saving Big Chickens although he said it wasn't all that good. I've decided I must read him Chrysanthemum & a Mr. Lunch book. :)

I think Julie & I decided this weekend too that There's a House Inside My Mommy is the freakiest book EVER. It is definitely NOT the way to tell your child about a new baby coming in to the family. Blech.

New Book-y-ness

Gods, I am not making things better. It's like...an addiction. I can't stop buying books!

Acquired b/c I read the first volume (damn my manga challenge) and couldn't resist getting the next volumes in the series:
  • Never Give Up #2 & #3 by Hiromu Mutou
  • Vampire Knight #2 by Matsuri Hino

That whole pre-ordery goodness comes through (plus a bonus):

  • No Humans Involved by Kelley Armstrong
  • Lean Mean Thirteen by Janet Evanovich
  • Kizuna: Bonds of Love #8 by Kazuma Kodaka

Know what doesn't help? I saw that B&N has their summer clearance and I spend $30 on an order last night. The good part is I got about 11 books & journals for the price. :)

Monday, June 18, 2007

You'll never guess! Nope, NEW BOOKS!

I bought:
  • Hana-Kimi #18 by Hisaya Nakajo

I love Hana-Kimi. I hope it goes on forever. But I know it won't. :(

I mooched:

  • The Drag King Anthology edited by Troka, Lebesco, & Noble

I borrowed this from MelCat, but didn't get to read it all. It was pretty cool. Yes, I find myself fascinated by drag kings and queens and other gender non-conformists. You knew that, didn't you?

AND I got this zine with the book I mooched:

  • shortandqueer #6

Which I am SO psyched about! I love zines! Especially queer zines! I'm so excited. I didn't even ASK for it. Yay, BONUS!!!

Personal Challenge--Read MY Manga Progress

All right! It's been...6 days, I think, since I issued myself this challenge to catch up on all the manga I have here. I've read the following this week:
  • W Juliet #11, #12, #13, #14
  • Ouran High School Host Club #7 & #8
  • Yubisaki Milk Tea #1

7 in 6 days, that's not bad, but I can do better! I've got a LOOONG way to go...

And I failed at hoarding. I found a bunch of neat looking books at the library this weekend and checked them out. :( But most of them are teen or kids books, so they'll go quickly! I hope!

Better get going so I can read my quota tonight! :)

New books part deux

I mooched:
  • Gilmore Girls: I Love You, You Idiot by Cathy East Dubowski
  • Gilmore Girls: Like Mother, Like Daughter by Catherine Clark

Gilmore Girls goodness!

Friday, June 15, 2007

New books, new books!

I mooched:
  • Agents of Light and Darkness by Simon R. Green

The second in that Nightside series by the guy who's supposed to be similar to Jim Butcher & Laurell K Hamilton.

I paperbackswapped:

  • Gilmore Girls: The Other Side of Summer by Helen Pai

Yes, yes...teen-y books based on TV shows. I know. But I watched the 6th season of Gilmore Girls recently and remembered how much I love GG and I saw the books and thought...hmm, maybe another way to get my GG fix? I have a couple more on the way!

I bought:

  • A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer edited by Eve Ensler & Mollie Doyle

Yay, Eve! It's a series of writings from others that they presented at the "Until the Violence Stops" festival in NY. I'm hoping it's interesting. :) I'm sure it is. Ahhh...I miss working on "The Vagina Monologues"...

Summer Reading Program--GO!

Okay, not go until Friday, but... I signed up for the A2 Summer Reading Program. Have I mentioned how much I love summer reading programs? I LOVE summer reading programs! It makes me feel like a kid again. :)

I only have to read 5 books by August 10th. *snorts* Like that's going to be hard. I will even make them ADULT books. Oooh... *laughs*

If only they had cooler prizes. If I read my 5 books, I'll get a coupon for a free loaf of bread at the Great Harvest Bread Company. Cool, but the same as last year. There's a grand prize drawing too, but I'm unlikely to win anything b/c I'm an employee. Blah.

The summer before I started this job at UM, I did the summer reading program at the Loutit Library in Grand Haven. It was awesome. There was a theme and you had to read six books, I think, and they had to be from certain categories. It was cool and fun! That's how I discovered Janet Evanovich's mysteries--b/c I had to read a mystery for the program! Pretty freaking sweet.

But Ann Arbor is lame and boring... *sighs* Oh well. It's still fun. :)

A plan to rule...my bookshelf!

Ah ha! I've got it! A plan! To read some of my OWN books! Woo hoo!

Okay, no more exclamation points.

Since I am so behind on many of my manga series and manga doesn't take long to read, I figure I can read one volume a night. It shouldn't take me that long to get through things. Right? Right! Or so I hope. I've got a crap load of manga to catch up on. I'm gonna say...it'll take me a month to catch up.

So, by July 11th, I should be caught up on my manga! It's my own personal challenge. Sweet. :)

Lay off the library books!

Oh yeah!

I'm also trying to stop borrowing so many library books so I can read the books I have at home. I'm trying really really hard. Once I have the books in my possession read and the holds in and read, I'm going to choose a number of library books to have out at one time and stick with it. Then, I'll choose a number of books I own to be reading at any one time and stick with it. That way, it's kinda win-win, you know? Well, I hope so...

Wish me luck. I don't know that I'm going to be any good at this...

Temporarily delayed and...NEW BOOKS!

I gave up on The Meaning of Wife but only temporarily. It's a REALLY fascinating book and I like it a lot, but it's dense. I don't know how else to describe it. I haven't read any part of it in ages, so I figured, I'll just take it back to the library. There's no reason to hoarde it. I'll just get it out later. I did the same thing with College Girls a couple months ago. I'll get back to them, b/c they are both interesting books that I want to read.

In other news, what I got today:
  • Spike: Asylum

Yay! BtVS spinoff thingies. And this one looks awesome. PLUS, I had earned $5 in Borders money and had a 20% off coupon, so the $20 book cost me only a little over $11. Sweet.

  • Click #1 by Youngran Lee

I know, just what I need, another manga/manhwa series to read, but it looks really interesting! I'll add it to the pile of other new manga series that I've bought and not read yet. :(

  • Good-bye, Chunky Rice by Craig Thompson

Oh, I love this book. That's why I had to get it. I love Chunky Rice, he's so cute and he goes away and his mouse friend is so sad... You must read this book.

I LOVE pre-ordering books!

I do, I do, I do! B/c you get them happily in the mail some date later than expected and you're like "Oh, look! It's one of my favorite author's new book!" It's like a present. Except you have to pay for it, but if you order it early enough, you don't even remember paying for it!

On that note, I got these in the mail today, but I preordered them AGES ago:
  • The Harlequin by Laurell K. Hamilton

Okay, I love Laurell K. Hamilton. I really do. But she's getting a little too sex-obsessed. I still like her books, I just miss the years when she was squeamish about writing sex scenes. And I'm behind on the Anita Blake series. I have to read Micah AND Danse Macabre before I can read this. The library and its tantalizing offer of books has been too much for me and I've fallen behind on my favorite authors. *sighs*

  • For a Few Demons More by Kim Harrison

Yep, behind with Kim Harrison too. I have to read A Fistful of Charms first. I better get my ass in gear b/c a new Janet Evanovich is coming out AND the last HP.

I also got Enchantment by Orson Scott Card today. I ordered it from PaperbackSwap. Sarah says it's one of her favorite books. And she recommended Ender's Game to me, which I loved, so I thought I'd give it a try. :)

So many books, so little time. Or...maybe I should stop getting so many books from the library. Hmmm....

Tuesday, June 5, 2007

And still more...

In the mail:
  • Little Vampire Goes to School by Joann Sfar

Joann Sfar is so cool. Read all his books. My favorite line from Little Vampire Goes to School? Little Vampire says "I should bring a present for the teacher," and his friend the monster says "Poop is always sure to please." Hee hee hee.

  • Underwear Do's and Don'ts by Todd Parr

Todd Parr's books rock...they're so colorful and fun and silly. And how could you not love a book about underwear? Yeah, yeah, I like kids books. And potty humor. There are worse things to like.

  • Domiknitrix: Whip Your Knitting Into Shape by Jennifer Stafford

I don't think I should go into why I'm so excited about this book...

Monday, June 4, 2007

More books for the shelves I don't have...

I got presents in the mail! Well, presents I paid for at half.com.
  • Something from the Nightside Simon R. Green

I saw at Borders that this guy's books are similar to Jim Butcher (who I'm totally digging) and old school Laurell K. Hamilton (who we know I love). So I thought I'd give them a try.

  • Still Angry Little Girls Lela Lee

I LOVE Angry Little Girls! Yay! I already read this too. It rocks, as usual. Go google Angry Little Girls if you've never seen them. Hilarious. :)

Forced homeboundedness

The only good thing about being ill is that you HAVE to stay home and read. :) A nasty kidney stone struck me last week and I've been home for most of the time since last Thursday. I've been reading a lot, but watching more DVDs. But I was to a point where I had so many books & DVDs to bring back to the library and so many things on hold, that I had to break my homeboundness and go out into the world. I had cleared my schedule from the library relatively easily and explained all that happened to my boss and she was way cool. So, when I showed up today, she said "You're not supposed to be out of bed!" I told her I really couldn't take it anymore and I had to get out of the house AND I was running out of things to watch (but never read!). I got my book fix, I guess. I have been reading, but not completing anything. Soon.

I also stopped at the comic book store. I had to! It had been over two weeks since I had been to check on my subscriptions.

So...my acquisitions for today:
  • Negima! #14 by Ken Akamatsu

Can't wait to read this! Yay for panty shots!

  • Gender Outlaw by Kate Bornstein

Yay, more Kate! And this is the first of an order from half.com.

  • Comic: Anita Blake Vampire Hunter: Guilty Pleasures Handbook

I'm kind of disappointed that it's not another issue. It's been quite a while. I'm wondering where the next issue is! I hope they don't stop making them b/c that would be very very sad. I love that they're making at least ONE Anita Blake into a comic. They look so cool. I hope they do a couple more of the books!
