Failure

*sighs*

I failed at not checking out any more library books. :(

No more library books!

Okay, in order to focus on some of my personal challenges like 1) reading some of my books over break and 2) reading all the Sookie Stackhouse books over break, I must not check out any more library books. Not permanently, just for awhile. Until I read some of the things I have. So the list I have now should not grow...unless some of my "on hold" books come in. I also culled some books I wasn't super excited about reading now in order to shorten the list.

Wish me luck.

Sookie Stackhouse!

Okay, so I never got into the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. I read the first one and was like "Eh. Okay." and never read any more. But I liked some of her other books. And then I got the first season of True Blood from Best Buy for $15. And I watched it. And it was awesome. So I decided to give Charlaine Harris and Sookie Stackhouse another try...

I got the first book from the library and read it in a couple days. But they didn't have the second one! So I bought it from the used bookstore. And then I remembered that our departmental secretary, Alma, loves the series. And I remembered seeing all the books in her office. So I visited her yesterday and she loaned them all (except the very new one) to me!

She sort of issued a challenge for me. She said she was sure that I would have them all read by the end of break. I have that to aspire to! But I'm still trying to get to my reading my own books challenge...if only there weren't so many interesting books at the library!!

Scott Pilgrim rocks!

I rented Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World the other day to watch again and it just reminded me how much I love Scott Pilgrim! So...I borrowed all the books that I don't have (all but #6) from the library and I think tonight, I'm going on a Scott Pilgrim binge. I'm going to read all 6. And it will be the first time I'll have read #6. YAY! :)

Sadness...with challenges

I hate it when I don't bring enough to read with me. :( Granted, I did think that I would spend more time doing other things and I did think that the book I brought would not be such a quick read... But still!

Okay, I've got two new challenges for myself:

1) Read some of my OWN books during the winter break from school. That way I can build up paperbackswap points by getting rid of the ones that I'm not absolutely committed to keeping. This should include some of the young adult books I got b/c I had to have them to read ASAP (and still haven't read them months or even over a year later) and some of my manga that I'm still behind on (I had an earlier challenge about this).

2) Reread all the Harry Potter books before the second part of Deathly Hollows comes out (which might be in July 2011?).

Also, I am working on a book project that is related to my counseling. I'm trying to gather some young adult books with supernatural themes that deal with grief issues to provide a bibliotherapy list. I submitted a proposal to a conference to do a presentation on this, but I still haven't heard if it's been accepted. If it doesn't get accepted, I might make it into an article. :)

Library book sale!!!

I went to the Friends of the Library book sale today. We went last year and picked up a lot of books, but they were super expensive (which we didn't realize until we went to pay). This year, the prices were much cheaper--yay!

It's odd, sort of, how things happen. Both my supervisor and one of my professor suggested that I look for this book called Radical Acceptance and wouldn't you know it? There it was at the book sale for $1!

I was also able to get two Serendipity books. One of my personal book challenges is to read all the Serendipity books (well, and the Little Mr. and Little Miss books too).

I got some other books too--a couple that I think are on my to read list. And some fun looking picture books. AND a book for one of my nephews for Christmas.

And I spent less than $11. Go me! ;)

ReadaThing Readathon!

My library is on LibraryThing. I never really got into any of the groups because, quite honestly, I wasn't interested in what other people had to say about books so much. I like to make my own decisions and such. But one day, I saw a blurb about the ReadaThing group and I looked it up. They do Readathons! How cool.

So, I just signed up for the August Readathon! It's on August 22nd and they were scheduling people so that someone (or several someones) around the world is reading for every hour of that day. I signed up for 12:00 am & 1:00 am EST (which is actually 10 & 11 pm the day before for me here in MST). But that's cool.

The theme is Reading in Public. I think I'll head out to the local Denny's and read for two hours on that day. :) I even have a sign to print out for it. FUN!

A new favorite word

I discovered this word a few weeks ago while reading Foyle's Philavery and thought it was a pretty cool word. But then...I found this word in a youth book about cats, Happy Birthday, Bad Kitty by Nick Bruel. How cool is that?

Anyway, the word is crepuscular. It means active at twilight (dawn and dusk).

A preoccupation

The last couple times I've been to the library, I've been interested in books about words or grammar. I only got one book the time before today. But then I graded a bunch of my students' papers and I think I became obsessed with grammar. So I sought out some grammar books today when I visited the library. I have the following language/word/grammar/punctuation books to read:
  • Anonyponymous: The Forgotten People Behind Everyday Words by John Bemelmans Marciano
  • Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynne Truss
  • Foyle's Further Philavery: A Cornucopia of Lexical Delights collected by Christopher Foyle
  • Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies: A Guide to Language for Fun & Spite by June Casagrand
  • Mortal Syntax: 101 Language Choices That Will Get You Clobbered by the Grammar Snobs--Even If You're Right by June Casagrande
  • Sister Bernadette's Barking Dog: The Quirky History and Lost Art of Diagramming Sentences by Kitty Burns Florey
Looks exciting, yeah? :)

A new favorite library activity

Okay, so it's not a totally NEW favorite library activity. I just started doing it more often recently. It is: browsing the new book shelves at the library!

I did this at AADL. It started while I was working there, mostly because shelving the new books was an activity I could do when things were slow. That, of course, lead to browsing and checking out the books that looked interesting. The fun part is that I end up reading books that I may have never discovered or would have thought about picking up.

I discontinued doing so once I got to the Branigan Library here in NM. Mostly because the new books sections never looked very large. I kept at it in the children's section, but most of those books, at least at Branigan, are not really new. After some wandering in the YA section one day, I discovered the YA new book shelf. And a book that I had really wanted to read on was there on it (I don't remember which book now)!

So I started browsing the adult fiction and non fiction new book sections in the last few months. Here are some gems I discovered:
  • Dogs & Devotion by The Monks of New Skete (A-NF)
A very cool book of photographs and quotes.
  • The Weiser Field Guide to Vampires: Legends, Practices, and Encounters Old and New by J.M. Dixon (A-NF)
  • How to Catch and Keep a Vampire: A Step-by-Step Guide to Loving the Bad and the Beautiful by Diana Laurence (A-NF)
Clearly, I was in a vampire phase. Two very different and equally fascinating books...
  • How to Be a Cowboy by Jim Arndt (A-NF)
Who wouldn't want to be a cowboy?
  • The Oxford Project by Peter Feldstein & Stephen G. Bloom (A-NF)
A very neat photo book that had photos of every person is the town of Oxford from the 80s and in 2000 (I think those were the dates).
  • Bear-ology: Fascinating Bear Facts, Tales & Trivia by Sylvia Dolson (A-NF)
Vital information. I can now tell the difference between a brown bear and a black bear.
  • Fifty Dresses That Changed the World by Design Museum (A-NF)
  • Fifty Shoes That Changed the World by Design Museum (A-NF)
I'm not a big fashion person, but these were pretty interesting!
  • Americanos: Latino Life in the United States by Edward James Olmos, Lea Ybarra, & Manuel Monterrey (A-NF)
  • Counter Culture: The American Coffee Shop Waitress by Candacy A. Taylor (A-NF)
  • Vanity Fair's Proust Questionnaire: 101 Luminaries Ponder Love, Death, Happiness, and the Meaning of Life edited by Graydon Carter & Risko (A-NF)
Books that contributed to my knowledge of Latinos, waitresses, and celebrities. Clearly, the knowledge of Latino culture was most useful to me, now that I am living in a place where Latino culture is so prevalent!
  • Girl on the Rocks: A Woman's Guide to Climbing with Strength, Grace, and Courage by Katie Brown (A-NF)
This book spawned my interest in trying rock climbing. Haven't done it yet, but it's on my list!
  • Workin' It!: RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Style by RuPaul (A-NF)
I love RuPaul! Would I have thought to look for this book if it wasn't on the new shelf? Probably not!
  • We Feel Fine: An Almanac of Human Emotion by Sep Kamvar & Jonathan Harris (A-NF)
Clearly, the best discovery so far. This book examines the use of feelings in blogs across the US. Blogs and their therapeutic benefits are one of my research interests. :)

And it won't end there. I'm still on the lookout. Some of my current check-outs are from the new book shelves and I look forward to reading them:
  • The Lives They Left Behind by Penney, Stastny, & Rinzler
  • White Like Me by Tim Wise
  • Foyle's Further Philavery collected by Christopher Foyle
  • Anonyponymous by John Bemelmans Marciano
Yay for cool new books! :)

Found a poem!

Love it, love it, love it!! :)

nobody but you
by Charles Bukowski

nobody can save you but
yourself.
you will be put again and again
into nearly impossible
situations.
they will attempt again and again
through subterfuge, guise and
force
to make you submit, quit and/or die quietly
inside.

nobody can save you but
yourself
and it will be easy enough to fail
so very easily
but don't, don't, don't.
just watch them.
listen to them.
do you want to be like that?
a faceless, mindless, heartless
being?
do you want to experience
death before death?

nobody can save you but
yourself
and you're worth saving.
it's a war not easily won
but if anything is worth winning then
this is it.

think about it.
think about saving your self.
your spiritual self.
your gut self.
your singing magical self and
your beautiful self.
save it.
don't join the dead-in-spirit.

maintain your self
with humor and grace
and finally
if necessary
wager your life as you struggle,
damn the odds, damn
the price.

only you can save your
self.

do it! do it!

then you'll know exactly what
I am talking about.

For my Papa

Dear Papa,

I found a book that I think you would have really enjoyed. I remember how much you loved Wile E. Coyote from the Loony Tunes cartoons. We used to watch them together when I was little and you and Grammie would babysit me.

I found The ACME Catalog! It shows, in full color with lots of fun descriptions, many of the purchases that Wile E. Coyote made in the cartoons! It was so much fun. My favorite was the bat costume. Do you remember that episode?

I wish that you were still alive so that I could have shared it with you. I think you would have laughed quite a bit. But, I am glad that I was able to enjoy it and think fondly of you. I miss you very much.

Wherever you might be, if you have access to books (and I hope you do), please see if you can find it. Read it and think of your favorite granddaughter.

Love always,
Dawn

Not quite as prolific this year. I'm going to blame that on school. :) My best month was April with 91 books and the worst was October with 26. Let's hope I can beat 655 for 2010! ;)

For comparison, I present 2008, 2007, & 2006! 2007 & 2008 were good years--and clearly, you can see I had no social life. :)

Books from Michigan

By the way, I did find that book, Marked. It was not in a black hole. It was in a place I didn't look because I was SURE that I hadn't even stopped there the night I lost it (i.e., the couch in my parents' basement). My dad found it. :) And I finished the book while I was in Michigan.

A funny library story from while I was in Michigan visiting family. The Grand Haven library, the Loutit District Library has recently been rebuilt. I hadn't been in the new library until I visited this time. A friend of my parents' works there. So, one day, when my dad was home from work, we went to the library after lunch. We wanted to see our friend and my dad hadn't seen the new library.

By the way, the library is beautiful! I wish I lived in Grand Haven again so I could go there all the time. :)

Our friend wasn't back from lunch yet, so I made my dad wander with me. And of course, I found some interesting books I wanted to read! I asked my dad if he had a library card and he said no. So I asked him to go get one so I could get some books out! I had read through nearly all of the books I had brought with me. And I found some really awesome doggie art type books (These Were Our Dogs and Lost). My dad, who is the awesomest, went and got a library card. :) Isn't that funny?

So, that was my Michigan vacation. Well, that and the three days I spent in airports because my flights kept getting delayed. I read a lot.

Happy New Year, everyone!
